Arlington Heights Historical Society: The Power of Music: Photographic Portraits of Americans and their Musical Instruments 1860-1915. The images presented in this exhibit show the personal side of music in America from 1860 to 1915. These intimate portraits, studio and outdoor, amateur and professional, convey a pride and sense of accomplishment, as well as a love of music. Civil War soldiers, cowboys, farmers, vaudeville performers, and middle-class Victorians pose with an amazing array of instruments -- stringed, brass, and woodwind. (December 5-January 31)

Chicago Newberry Library: With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition.  In addition to the Bible upon which both President Lincoln and President Barack Obama took the Oath of Office, there is a draft of the Gettysburg Address which is thought to be the earliest copy, plus the contents of Lincoln's pockets on the night he was assassinated. (ends 12/19/09)

June 6 - December 3, 2006:  "Bejeweled Bereavement: Mourning Jewelry -- 1765-1920"
Museum of Funeral Customs, 1440 Monument Avenue, Springfield, IL 62702, 217-544-3480

Cecily Edwards of the University of Illinois-Springfield Public History program, the exhibit's guest curator, researched, created, and installed the exhibit as part of her thesis project for earning her Master of Arts degree.  "Bejeweled Bereavement" examines the purpose and meaning of mourning jewelry as memorial and as individual expression of grief and loss.  The exhibit includes dozens of pieces to illustrate varying styles, designs, and material utilized in the creation of mourning jewelry from the second half of the 18th century through the Victorian Era and following generation.  The exhibit is made possible through the loan of objects by Mr. Virgil Davis of Springfield, IL, former funeral director who with his late wife, Nancy, collected these and other funeral and mourning material.

September 15 - November 12, 2006:  "Historically Modern: Early to Mid-20th Century Architecture in Beverly Hills and Morgan Park"

The Exhibit, with text and photos by historic preservation consultant and Ridge County Historical Society board member Jennifer Kenny, delivers a refreshing look at how Chicagoans embraced or reacted to Modern architectural design trends of the 10th century.  While the Chicago area has very few existing modernistic single-family residential designs, examples of the Art Deco, Art Moderne, International and Late Prairie styles were constructed in architecturally rich Beverly Hills and Morgan Park between 1925 and 1965.

11   Bus Trip to Allerton Park on May 11, 2007

The 1500-acre woodland, garden, meadow, and prairie landscape that surrounds Allerton House was once the private estate of Robert Henry Allerton. In 1946, Allerton gave his beautiful Illinois estate to the University of Illinois for use as “an educational and research center, as a forest and wild-life and plant-life reserve, as an example of landscape architecture, and as a public park.” The core of the estate features an English-inspired manor house to be toured with lunch served in the dining room. Outside there is a reflecting pond, an approximately 10-acre meadow, and a series of formal sculpture gardens through which we will be given a guided tour. There will be a tour of the quaint and historic town of Monticello.

The cost of the trip, lunch included, is $50.00 for members; $60.00 for non-members. Reserve your place on the bus by sending a check to SCHS, 308 E. Adams, 62701.

15   Sangamon County Historical Society Monthly Program: The Statehouse Pressroom—A Place Like No Other

Taylor Pensoneau

A very lively period in the history of the pressroom in the Illinois Statehouse—the years from the mid 1960s through the late 1970s—will be relived by Taylor Pensoneau, a pressroom occupant in that time frame as the Illinois political correspondent
for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Through the years, the pressroom in the Capitol has been the home of numerous newspaper and broadcast reporters (some of whom became stars in their profession), public relations operatives, political hangers-on and a sometimes zany assortment of characters. The conglomeration took on a life of its own, even though the mission in the pressroom—to get out news about state government—never was subverted. The years from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s constituted an especially robust pressroom period, one in which investigative reporting often took center stage.

Pensoneau spent sixteen years with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the last twelve of them in the Statehouse pressroom. After leaving the newspaper in 1978, he worked for the Illinois Coal Association for twenty-six years. When he retired several years ago, he was the organization's president. He is the author of five books, including the biographies of Governors Richard Ogilvie and Dan Walker and of legendary Illinois Senate leader W. Russell Arrington. A former president of the Illinois Center for the Book, Pensoneau is currently the president of the Sangamon County Historical Society.

This year's program features Utah Phillips, the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest. Expressing the richness of his unique perspectives on American life with uncommon wit and humor, this elder statesman of our folk culture has been delighting crowds for generations by sharing lore of true American heroes, tales of working people accomplishments through solidarity, and sometimes through insolent individuality. Combining the songs of the Wobblies (International Workers of the World), with tales of their direct action techniques, Utah weaves a patchwork that can guide today's worker through perils of the work-a-day world.

15 7 pm The Underground Railroad

Owen Muelder, director of the new Underground Railroad Freedom Center at Knox College, will speak about the Underground Railroad at the Mercer County Historical Society Fall meeting.

The Underground Railroad was an informal network of people who helped thousands of African-American slaves escape to freedom. In Mercer County, there were three stations in the western part of Green Township at the homes of David, John, and William Carnahan, Wesleyan Methodists who had established a church near their homes. All that remains today is a historic cemetery where some of the markers still show the Carnahan name.

30 7 pm THE CASE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN:
A story of Adultery, Murder and
the Making of a Great President

Presentation and book signing by author Julie Fenster

The year 1856 was a pivotal one for this country, witnessing the birth of the Republican Party as we know it. But according to a new book by author Julie Fenster, it was also a critical year in the troubled political life of Abraham Lincoln.  As a lawyer, he tried his most scandalous murder case.  At the same time, he made a decision which unleashed his soaring abilities for the first time, a decision which reverberates to this day: whether or not to join the new Republican Party.

Julie Fenster is an award-winning author and historian, specializing in nineteenth-century life. She is the co-author (with Douglas Brinkley) of The New York Times bestseller Parish Priest.  Her other books include the Ether Day and Race of the Century.  She was a regular contributor to American Heritage, and has also written for The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times

15 12:15 pm The Classical Perspective

Thomas Gordon Smith, architect, will talk about the current reanimation of classical architecture in relation to his role as an architectural fellow for the U.S. General Services Administration. Chicago is a great setting for this theme due to the classical federal presence before WWII, as well as the move away from classicism during the 1960's (e.g., Mies van der Rohe's Federal Center). Smith will focus on new designs by Chicago architects Hammond, Beeby, Rupert, Ainge, which represent GSA's renewed interest to the classical idiom.

20 7pm Sangamon County Historical Society Monthly Program:
A. Lincoln with Compass and Chair

Presentation by Robert Church highlighting a relatively unknown segment of Lincoln's life -- his work as a surveyor. Although Lincoln served as Deputy Surveyor for only a few years, the experience greatly influenced him as an attorney. In 1859, he was asked to give an opinion on how land surveyors were to find the center of a Section, which had been set by the Original Government Surveyors in the 1820's. Lincoln's legal opinion, given on January 6, 1859, still stands today.

Robert Church is the Executive Director and Lobbyist of the Illinois Professional Land Surveyors Association (IPLSA) and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the NSPS Foundation, and serves as treasurer of the National Museum of Surveying.

26-27   Lincoln Circuit Ride

Join us in celebration of Abraham Lincoln.  On the first weekend April 26/27 the Lincoln Circuit Ride will begin as Lincoln did; in Springfield. On the second weekend October 11/12 the Lincoln Circuit Ride will begin in Urbana. Motorcyclists will lead all the conveyances that follow as this is a family event. Over the two weekends, the ride will cover approximately 500 miles and make stops in many of communities where Lincoln learned the words that inspired our nation then and now.

Illinois' Old Eighth Judicial Circuit provided the life experiences that made Abraham Lincoln immortal. We will make every attempt to ride the same roads and visit the same court houses as Abe. Bring your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.  Bring your bike, car, truck or ride the trolley. This collective memorial to Lincoln and the Old Eighth Judicial Circuit which shaped his life began in 1914 with the Alliance Chapter of the DAR in Champaign-Urbana.

Registration: $10 per weekend

Chicago Portage National Historic Site Tour

Friends of the Chicago Portage announce the first in their 2008 series of free public tours of the Chicago Portage National Historic Site. This tour will explore the “Birth Story” of Chicago from the geologic beginnings  of the Portage to how it is still functioning in Chicago today. One of only two National Historic Sites in Illinois,
the Chicago Portage National Historic Site is the only place where you can stand on the same ground walked upon by all the explorers, early settlers and creators of Chicago.

Tours are approximately a 1/2 mile in length on a gravel path through the woods and
take about two hours. Wear long pants and walking shoes or boots.

Tours run rain or shine.

The late Tribune columnist John Husar, after touring the site called
it: “Our sacred ground”. It is certainly Chicago’s “Plymouth Rock”.

All tours are free and open to the public.

10-11   ISHS Annual Tour

Get ready for a grand adventure this fall as the ISHS explores Bishop Hill, the Swedish utopian community established in 1846 by religious separatists in Henry County. This small town in north central Illinois holds onto its unique Swedish heritage and is one of the most popular and distinctive historic sites in the state. Participants will tour the Bishop Hill colony museum and see the renowned Olof Krans’ paintings, which document the history of this simple agrarian community; dine on Swedish meatballs and noodles at the Red Oaks Inn; tour the colony church and historic hotel; explore the traditional arts and crafts in the village blacksmith shop; and take home delicious pastries from the Bishop Hill Colony Bakery.

Other tour sites along the way include: Historic Knoxville, the first county seat of Knox County; the Galesburg Railroad Museum; and Underground Railroad hideaways in and around Galesburg, an abolitionist stronghold in ante-bellum Illinois. 11-12   Lincoln Circuit Ride
