What do Jane Addams, Charlie Birger, Richard Daley,
Michael Jordan, Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Studs Terkel,
and Grace Wilbur Trout have in common? They, along with more
hundreds of other prominent Americans, have become part of
our Prairie State story. In Historic Illinois: An
Illustrated History, by Janice Petterchak, their stories, as
well as the dramas of the Chicago Fire, the Cherry Mine
Disaster, the Mormon “wars,” and the Haymarket Riot are
threaded into a tapestry as subtle, colorful, and profound
as any prairie landscape.
Published by Historic Publishing Network of San Antonio,
Texas, Historic Illinois is a coffee-table history
commissioned by the Illinois State Historical Society. The
author, Janice Petterchak of Rochester, Illinois, is the
former director of the Illinois State Historical Library and
author of more than a dozen books. Historic Illinois
includes more than 100 photographs, lithographs, and
paintings chronicling the state’s history from prehistoric
times to present day, and features Robert Thom’s handsome
painting, “Jolliet and Marquette, August 1673,” on the
cover.
The book also includes business biographies of more than
25 Illinois corporations that have made significant economic
contributions to their communities and the state of
Illinois, including Deere & Company, Passavant Area
Hospital, Robert Morris College, Allstate, and Levi, Ray &
Shoup, Inc.
Historic Illinois sells for $49.95 (plus $5 shipping and
handling) but is available for a limited time to members of
the Illinois State Historical Society for $30, and $40 for
non-members. For more information about Historic Illinois:
